Baritone Georgy Vasilievich Zastavny, an outstanding opera singer and Honoured Artist of the RSFSR, died eleven years ago.
A graduate of the Lvov Conservatoire, in 1975 Georgy Zastavny became a lead soloist at the Kirov Theatre, to which he dedicated his entire stage career. Over the twenty-seven years that he worked at the Mariinsky Theatre he sang almost all the lead roles of the baritone repertoire to great acclaim, while his performances of chamber music form part of the “gold reserves” of Russian music. A magnificent singer and performing artist, he also made use of his exceptional knowledge of vocals in his teaching. A teacher at the Leningrad Conservatoire and the Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers, Georgy Zastavny trained more than a few opera stars, among them the now internationally acclaimed Tatiana Serjan, Alexei Markov and Edem Umerov.
Colleagues, students and admirers of the talent of Georgy Zastavny admired him not only as a wonderful performer and teacher but, first and foremost, as a man of lofty spiritual ideals.
