Dmitry Otyakovsky graduated with distinction from the Rimsky-Korsakov Krasnodar College of Music, having specialised in vocal art (class of Ivan Shulzhevsky), in 2011 and from the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory as a musical theatre stage director (class of Irkin Gabitov) in 2017. Also studied at the Lenfilm studio’s Advanced School of Directors and Screenwriters. In 2017 Dmitry trained at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Düsseldorf), where as an assistant to stage director Guy Joosten he worked on Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda, and in 2020 – at the Staatstheater Nürnberg, where he participated in the production of Rubinstein’s The Demon. In 2023 Otyakovsky completed an assistant traineeship at Moscow’s Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS).

From 2011 to 2020 he worked at the Mariinsky Theatre, first as a soloist with the Academy of Young Opera Singers (made his debut at the theatre in 2012 in Don Carlo, also sang in Don Quichotte by Massenet, The Nose, The Love for Three Oranges, and in 2016 he has appeared at the Mariinsky Theatre premiere of Weinberg’s The Idiot, performing the role of Ardalion Alexandrovich Ivolgin), then as a guest stage director: Dmitry Otyakovsky’s works include the children’s productions The Adventures of Kintaro (2018), Loskutik and the Cloud (2020), Masha and the Bear (2020), the concert series Film Music at the Mariinsky in the Shchedrin Hall (2018), the theatre divertissement The Soul of St Petersburg – the Mariinsky Theatre in the Stravinsky Foyer (2018) and the opening ceremonies of the Virtuosi of the Flute International Festival at the Concert Hall (2018 and 2019).

His creative career has also featured productions at various venues (including the Moscow Musical Theatre Helikon-Opera, the Moscow Concert Hall Zaryadye, the Moscow International Performing Arts Centre, the Moscow State Opera and Ballet Theatre for Young Audience named after Natalia Sats, the Magnitogorsk and Chuvash opera and ballet theatres), among them Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri, Shostakovich’s The Antiformalist Rayok, Weber’s Der Freischütz, Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne, Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Puccini’s Tosca and La bohème, Rachmaninoff’s Francesca da Rimini, Voitenko’s Glossary 2.0 and Sagdiev’s Palace Guards and Hearing Voices, the programme Quartet 4х4 of Kultura TV, a charitable dinner of the Onegin National Opera Award, a concert marking the anniversary of the Ryazan Regional Philharmonic and other theatre concerts and music and drama productions.

From 2018 to 2020 Dmitry Otyakovsky was a stage director at the Hermitage Theatre (St Petersburg), and from 2020 to 2023 – the curator at the International Digital Opera Lab (Moscow). Since November 2023 he has been General Director of the Khabarovsk Regional Musical Theatre.
