Joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1975.
Has staged many works by Shakespeare in Stratford and London, among them The Comedy of Errors, Twelfth Night, Troilus and Cressida and The Merry Wives of Windsor.
Other directing credits include The Rivals and King Lear (Old Vic, London), The Orchestra (King’s Head), Friends of Dorothy and How Lucky Can You Get (Donmar Warehouse, London), Banana Ridge and Peter Pan (Show Festival, Canada) and Henry VIII and Love for Love (Chichester Festival Theatre).

Musicals include Oh Kay! (Chichester Festival Theatre), The Swan-Down Gloves (RSC), Merrily We Roll Along (Guildhall Theatre, the Barbican and the Bloomsbury Theatre, London), Bitter Sweet (New Sadler’s Well Opera), A Little Night Music (Chichester Festival Theatre and Piccadilly Theatre, London), Show Boat (RSC, Opera North and the London Palladium) and Westside Story (Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney).

Ian Judge’s opera credits include Faust, The Merry Widow, Cavalleria rusticana, I pagliacci, Don Quichotte (English National Opera), Macbeth, Tosca, Acis and Galatea, Atilla, Boris Godunov (Opera North), Ariodante (Buxton Festival), Falstaff (Scottish Opera and the Bremen Theatre), Lohengrin (Wiesbaden), Tosca and Madama Butterfly (Los Angeles Music Center Opera with Maria Ewing and Plácido Domingo), Norma (Scottish Opera and Die Bühne Graz), Macbeth (Cologne Opera), Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Victoria State Opera and Houston Grand Opera), Così fan tutte (Garsington Opera Festival) and Der Fliegende Holländer and Simon Boccanegra (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden).

Recent works include La bohème (Mariinsky Theatre, St Petersburg), The Mikado (D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, Savoy Theatre, London), revivals of the operas Faust (Opera Queensland Brisbane and Opera Australia in Sydney), Falstaff with Sir John Eliot Gardiner (Royal Albert Hall), Simon Boccanegra (Washington Opera), Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Houston Grand Opera), Mephistopheles (English National Opera) and Shakespeare’s Macbeth (Sydney Theatre Company).
