Gábor Farkas

Piano

Gábor Farkas was born in 1981 in Ózd (Hungary). In 2005 he graduated from the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music (Budapest), where in 2014 he became a Doctor of Liberal Arts (DLA). Under the tutelage of Professor William Grant Naboré he continued his studies at the International Piano Academy Lake Como (Italy).

Prize-winner at the National Youth Piano Competition (Tarhos, Hungary, 1998; 1^st prize), the Földes Andor Piano Competition (Budapest, 1999; 2^nd prize), the Bartók Béla Piano Competition (Baden bei Wien, Austria, 2000; 1^st prize), the Greta Erikson International Piano Competition (Karlstad, Sweden, 2000; 2^nd prize), the Liszt Ferenc International Piano Competition (Budapest, 2001; 3^rd prize), the Hungarian Radio’s National Piano Competition (Budapest, 2003; 1^st prize) and the International FRANZ LISZT Piano Competition Weimar–Bayreuth (2009; 1^st prize, Audience Award and special prize for the best Haydn interpretation). Recipient of the Liszt Ferenc International Record Grand Prix and the Gundel Art Prize (2009), as well as the Liszt Ferenc Award (2012) – the highest award in the arts in Hungary.

Has appeared at Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center (New York), the Teatro La Fenice (Venice), the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris), BOZAR (Brussels), the Rachmaninoff Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Auditorio Nacional de Música (Madrid), the National Centre for the Performing Arts (Beijing), the Bunka Kaikan concert hall (Tokyo) and the Seoul Center for the Performing Arts among other venues. Has participated in the Budapest Spring Festival, the International Piano Forum (Berlin), the Schumann Festival (Zwickau, Germany), the Pèlerinages Weimar Art Festival, the Thuringia Bach Festival, the Liszt Festival in Gödöllő (Hungary) and the Vilnius Piano Music Festival.

Has released several discs on the labels Brilliant Classics, Warner Classics, Steinway Records, Toccata Classics and Hungaroton. Since 2017 he has been an exclusive artist for Steinway & Sons.

Head of the Keyboard and Harp Department at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music (Budapest) and guest professor at the Tokyo College of Music.
