Marcelo Gomes

Marcelo Gomes was born in Manaus (Brazil). He began his dance studies at the Helena Lobato and Dalal Achcar ballet schools in Rio de Janeiro, continued his training at The HARID Conservatory in Boca Raton, Florida (the USA), as well as at summer courses at the schools of the Boston Ballet, Houston Ballet, and Cuballet, where he studied under Alicia Alonso. The prize at the competition in Lausanne gave Marcelo the opportunity to spend the season 1996-1997 at the School of the Paris Opera Ballet.

In 1997 Marcelo Gomes joined American Ballet Theatre as a member of the Corps de Ballet, being promoted to Soloist in 2000 and Principal Dancer in 2002 until 2017.

His repertoire includes leading roles in classical ballets: Giselle (Albrecht), Bayadère (Solor), Don Quixote (Basilio, Espada), The Sleeping Beauty (Prince Désiré, Carabosse), Swan Lake (Prince Siegfried, Benno and von Rothbart), Raymonda (Jean de Brienne and Abderchaman), Le Corsaire (Conrad, Ali and Lankendem), as well as Romeo and Juliet (Romeo) and Manon (Lescaut and Des Grieux) by Kenneth MacMillan, Onegin (Onegin and Prince Gremin) by John Cranko, The Nutcracker (the Nutcracker-Prince) by Alexei Ratmansky. He has performed leading roles in the works of George Balanchine, Michel Fokine, Anthony Tudor, Kenneth MacMillan, Jerome Robbins, Frederick Ashton, John Cranko, and Martha Graham, and has worked with Twyla Tharp, John Neumeier, William Forsythe, Paul Taylor, Mark Morris, Jiri Kylian, Lar Lubovitch, James Kudelka, Nacho Duato, Jorma Elo, Benjamin Millepied, Christopher Wheeldon, Alexei Ratmansky and Matthew Bourne.

Marcelo Gomes has been a guest artist with the Mariinsky Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, Royal Ballet, New York City Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Houston Ballet, Teatro Colon, Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, Universal Ballet, Mikhailovsky Ballet, Sarasota Ballet, Tokyo Ballet and Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures. As a choreographer, Marcelo Gomes has created ballets for American Ballet Theatre, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, the project The Kings of the Dance, ABT’s Studio Company, Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro and Sarasota Ballet.
