Alexei Vasiliev was born in 1971 in Leningrad. Graduated from the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory in 1995 as a cellist (class of Anatoly Nikitin). Prize-winner at the Trapani International Chamber Music Competition (Italy, 1995; 3rd prize, in duet with pianist Alexandra Zhilina). While still a student he began to work in the cello section of the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra (1991–2006). Currently teaches cello at the St Petersburg Conservatory (Professor of the Cello, Double Bass, Harp and Quartet Department), the Secondary Special Music School of the St Petersburg Conservatory and at the St Petersburg Rimsky-Korsakov College of Music.

Actively appears in concert as a soloist and together with instrumental ensembles. Has performed with the Symphony Orchestra of the St Petersburg State Capella, the New St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra and the St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra. Has collaborated with the conductors Leo Korchin, Ravil Martynov, Algirdas Paulavičius, Vladimir Begletsov, Svyatoslav Luther, Alexander Chernushenko, Vladimir Alempyev and Roman Leontiev.

Since 2008 he heads the Algirdas Paulavičius Youth Symphony Orchestra. The ensemble tours to towns and cities throughout Russia and Europe; Liana Isakadze, Pavel Yegorov, Sergei Slovachevsky, Alexei Massarsky, Martti Rousi, Daniil Trifonov and Pavel Milyukov are among numerous other artists to have appeared with the ensemble.

Regularly runs cello masterclasses all over the world.

From 2006 to 2015 Alexei Vasiliev has directed the St Petersburg Rimsky-Korsakov College of Music. In August 2015 he became Acting Rector of the St Petersburg Conservatory. In December 2016 he was elected its Rector.
